How does NLP work?

It works for you.  By reviewing the areas you choose for positive, lasting changes, your practitioner will quickly assess with you your motivations and key drivers.

Your practitioner may already while talking to you help with changes conversationally through positive re-enforcement of what you would like the outcome to be for permanent change.  Engaging your six senses, your practitioner will work with your objective for the session – here you may engage in a combination of gentle relaxation, visualisation and some fun exercises to allow the changes to happen.

Working with your unconscious and hypnotherapy

Your unconscious is the most powerful aspect and driver behind your behaviours and experience in life.

Have you ever “told” yourself that you are going to give up chocolate or study harder for a promotion or even take up a hobby, only to find with all good intentions and plans, you only manage to stick to this goal or objective for 2 days or if you are lucky up to a week or two?

Now think of something that you do unconsciously all the time….like

Breathing

Walking

Your eye blinking

Brushing your teeth

Do you think about every breath you take?  Or when you are due to take your next breath?  Do you ever forget to breath?  No.

 The reason being, that breathing is an unconscious process.  It is something we all do (if we are alive).  We do not consciously think about it.  It happens “naturally”.  There is a bigger part of your mind that knows how to do this and most importantly knows how to do this well and competently!  This part of your mind is called your “Unconscious Mind”. 

Taking your first step…

Fine, with walking for a one year old, taking a first step is not always easy.  When you took your first step you have probably spent some time watching adults walk around you.  How they walk, perhaps your parent or guardian have taken both your hands and guided you a few steps. 

 The initial trial of taking a few steps may have resulted in the pain of falling or not getting it quite right.  Though as there is someone cheering you to continue to take your first steps, there is cheers and applause of encouragement.  You may giggle, smile and then be encouraged to continue to learn how to take your first step…and then it happens – you take your FIRST STEP.  You receive amazing applause, love and appreciation.  You have done this once!  You try it again  – walking one step to two, to three…then soon you are walking around perhaps still looking for props to keep your step steady….and before long….. you are walking, consciously thinking about how you are doing this well.  You start to do “taking steps, and walking” in your stride, and this just happens.  Amazingly, you are now so skilled at this behaviour that you forget how to consciously do this, and “walking” becomes an unconscious behaviour – a behaviour you do not have to ask yourself to think about!  You continue to do “walking” unconsciously all your life since that very first step.

 This is the process of how behaviour is learnt to competence, then logged to the unconscious memory forever to repeat this cycle, this programme for you.

 Overcoming bad habits and behaviours

Now this is a good thing if you have learnt behaviours that are productive for you and helps you live a fulfilling life.  However, there may be some behaviours such as overeating, compulsive behaviours such as nail biting, fears of heights and spiders or other phobias, low self esteem to name a few that you may have also learnt so well to unconscious competence!  These unresourceful behaviours may be driving your conscious behaviours.  These may be what you would like to change for good, or you may just find with this therapy a body of knowledge, that it is also possible to set some new exciting learning or set a new skill or talent in place.

 Your practitioner will be able to work with you in accessing your unconscious directly with you through the process of relaxation, visualisation, or an altered state of consciousness called hypnotherapy to enable the process of re-setting some of this old unresourceful behaviour to new more empowering ones for you. 

For example a fear of dancing can be transformed in a short time, to a love and inner confidence of getting up on the floor and dancing as well as enjoying a social evening with friends.  A fear or phobia can be transformed into an empowering international career because you are no longer stuck in an old learnt pattern of fear when flying.
